DYSLEXIA SERVICES
Our Mission.
To assist students with dyslexia in the achievement of independent literacy skills by providing service and support to students, their parents, and school personnel through identification, instruction, and community awareness.
WHAT IS DYSLEXIA?
Dyslexia is a specific learning disability (difference) that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction.
Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.

WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF DYSLEXIA?
A child with dyslexia may have difficulty with:

reading single words

learning letter names and sounds

decoding (breaking apart) unfamiliar words

reading fluently

spelling

understanding a text or story

written expression

remembering common words (vocabulary or names of objects)

putting rhymes together
